If you enjoy taking care of your garden and a severe storm is expected to occur in your area soon, here are some steps you should take to prepare your garden for this event.
Have some horticultural sand delivered
As soon as you hear about the forecasted storm, you should find a gardening supply company in your area that offers sand delivery services and order some horticultural sand from them. The reason for this is as follows; the heavy rain that occurs during this type of weather event could leave the roots of your plants so waterlogged that they end up dying.
However, ordering some horticultural sand could potentially stop this from happening to your plants when the storm arrives. This is because mixing some sand into the soil where your plants are located can alter the structure of the soil in such a way that the rainwater that lands on it does not simply pool around the roots of the plants, but instead trickles downwards. In this manner, the sand could prevent your plants from dying as a result of exposure to too much rainwater.
Bring any gardening equipment you usually keep outdoors into your home for the duration of the storm
Before the storm gets underway, you should take any gardening equipment that you usually keep outdoors and bring it into your home.
The reason for this is as follows; whilst most gardening equipment is designed for outdoor use and as such, can withstand being exposed to stormy weather without falling apart, any items with sharp edges that are left in your garden during the storm end up being flung around by the strong winds, which may then lead to them hitting and breaking other items in your garden.
For example, if you leave a pickaxe lying on your outdoor table, this item could end up being blown off the table by the wind and being flung against a nearby outdoor lamp, which could then result in the lamp shattering.
Put a burlap or fleece tunnel over your flowerbeds
If you have lots of flowerbeds in your garden, then it is important to protect these from the wind that is likely to occur during the storm. The best way to do this is to put a tunnel made of plastic poles and either fleece or burlap over your flowerbeds. You can purchase a readymade tunnel at a gardening centre or make one yourself if you have these materials lying around.
This tunnel will drastically reduce the amount of wind that the flowerbeds are exposed to during the storm. This, in turn, will prevent the flowers heads from being knocked off and their stems from being broken by the wind.
